Volunteer Opportunity to Clean Up San Diego Creek

Come join us on September 21st from 9 am until Noon for the annual Inner-Coastal Watershed Clean Up Day!

We have been invited to join the good folks at the Irvine Ranch Water District (where we hold our monthly general meeting) to join them and the community at the annual Inner-Coastal Watershed Clean Up Day. Trash that is not picked up eventually ends up polluting the ocean and is highly destructive to the environment.  The following is copied from the memo asking for our assistance:

Hundreds of volunteers arrive to pick up hundreds of pounds of trash from the San Diego Creek located at 3512 Michelson Dr, Irvine CA 92618 near the IRWD Michelson Water Reclamation Plant each year. This event brings awareness to watershed liter and encourages involvement in cleaning and protecting our watershed.  Invite family, friends, co-workers to volunteer!

This event is outdoors so please be prepared for the weather- sunblock, hats, protective clothing and jackets may be needed. Also bring a refillable water container to stay hydrated. We will provide the latex gloves, safety masks and trash bags.

Cystic Fibrosis Ride for Life Event

Join OC Wheelmen at the 9th Annual CF Cycle for Life coming up on Saturday, October 12th at the The Cyclist Bike Shop, in Costa Mesa, CA. The OC Wheelmen are honored to have been riding in the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s cycling ride from the beginning, 9 years ago, and are excited to be riding with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation again this year.

Because of our generous sponsorship to support the search for a cure for cystic fibrosis, you can register for the ride for FREE and the minimal fundraising fee of $150 is waived. However, we encourage all members to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation by personally donating and/or raising money. Your FREE registration includes a fully supported ride with breakfast, rest stops every 10-15 miles, a lunch stop, SAG vehicles and the best food and beer at the finish.

The mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide all people with the disease the opportunity to lead full, productive lives by funding research and drug development, promoting individualized treatment and ensuring access to high-quality, specialized care.

A few decades ago, most people with CF didn't live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, people with the disease are graduating from high school and college, pursuing careers, getting married and starting families of their own. The average life expectancy is in the 40s but that is still too young! Ride with our team today and help us raise more funds to support lifesaving research.

We’re on the road to a cure, but we need your help. Will you join the fight against CF? To register, go to our team page by clicking here, and enter the discount code rideOC during the registration process.

If you need assistance, please email Shaina Flesser at sflesser@cff.org or call 949.390.5913.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, October 12th

Joe Bernhardt, President – Orange County Wheelmen
